It was a great time to visit a bouldering gym in this region again. We chose Monk Rotterdam, my favorite location of all the Monk branches.

Anyone looking to boulder in Rotterdam and searching for a spacious gym with plenty of variety is in the right place here, in my opinion. It had been a while since I had been to Monk Rotterdam, and for Lina, it was even her first time.

De indeling van Monk Rotterdam

Monk Rotterdam is big, with bouldering walls on both sides. A few small improvements have been made since my previous visit. After checking in and changing clothes, you enter the gym through plastic strip curtains. On the left, you will immediately find a small climbing wall for children.

At the back on the left, there is one mushroom-shaped wall, and at the back of the gym you will find the training area. This includes an adjustable Kilterboard, a MoonBoard, and a large spray wall. There is also a small, colourful outdoor wall. The gym has quite a lot of overhanging walls, which I personally do not mind. The wall shapes are also well designed. This makes the selection feel varied, with plenty of options for different climbing styles.

There is one wall section that I never fully know what to do with. At the back on the right side of the gym, there is an overhanging cave. I think this is mainly because the other walls are very close to it. As a result, this area feels a little less spacious and clear than the rest of the gym.

The bouldering session in Monk Roterdam

The selection of holds is extensive, although you should not expect the newest hold sets. There are, however, many small edges. These are not only used on slab boulders, but also on overhangs.

Some boulders, just like at Monk Eindhoven , are extra long and have multiple starting positions. We previously wrote that we found the setting style at Monk Eindhoven quite classic. During a later visit, I already noticed more variety. At Monk Rotterdam, the balance feels just right to me: classic boulders are nicely combined with a more dynamic style.

The boulders are set by colour, and as always, we started with the easiest circuits. The first boulders felt easy for us. On the first 7A I tried, I made a few mistakes. My hand sequence was not right, which meant I needed extra attempts. Next to me, several young climbers were working on a mint-coloured boulder. After watching their beta and brushing the holds, I topped it in one attempt. Later, I saw on Toplogger that it was a 7B. This boulder clearly suited me better than the 7A before it.

After walking around the gym, I noticed an interesting boulder on the mushroom-shaped wall. I felt that it was possible, but I could not find the right body position. Something had to happen with a toe hook on the right side. In the end, I chose a different beta and placed my left heel near my hand. This solution worked much better for me.

While I focused on the harder boulders, Lina climbed several boulders in the lower circuits. There was plenty of choice for her as well. The easier boulders were not just ladders, but often included a challenging element. This also makes Monk Rotterdam a fun place for climbers who are just starting with bouldering.

At the end of the session, two other climbers came over to talk to us. They recognised us from our Instagram channel. It is always nice to meet followers and exchange ideas and tips. After a short chat, there was one more wall to try: the outdoor wall. It is not very large and, I think, is mainly used during group bouldering sessions. We took a crash pad from the stack and climbed a few more boulders. We mainly wanted to test the wall, as our energy was already gone by then.

Final thoughts

It was a successful bouldering session at Monk Rotterdam, with many cool and varied boulders. I would have liked to try more, but my skin and energy were gone. The gym has a good atmosphere. The music was good and the staff were very friendly. Altogether, this creates a pleasant vibe. Monk Rotterdam is, for me, the most enjoyable Monk location and definitely recommended for anyone who wants to go bouldering in Rotterdam.

Net voor de hittegolf waren we in de buurt van Rotterdam.
