As the first bouldering gym in the Netherlands, it has played a key role in the growth of the sport, expanding from a humble garage to a chain with multiple locations across the country and even one in Belgium. Although the original location in Strijp had to make way for new developments, Monk Eindhoven remains centrally located and continues to be a cornerstone of bouldering in the Netherlands.

Accessibility and Facilities

Monk Eindhoven is easy to reach, with paid parking available right in front of the gym and a train station within walking distance. Inside, the gym offers three large bouldering mushrooms on the ground floor and three smaller ones upstairs. There’s also a dedicated training area equipped with a moonboard, an adjustable kilterboard, and an impressive spray wall. With over 200 boulders and an extensive training space, the gym caters to climbers of all levels, from beginners to experienced athletes.

Bouldering Style: Back to Basics

The vibe at Monk Eindhoven is both authentic and classic. The boulders emphasize fundamentals —fixing holds and finishing movements —reminiscent of outdoor climbing. There’s less of the “gimmicky” moves seen in modern gyms, though you’ll still find the occasional dynamic or otherwise crazy route. This style is perfect for climbers seeking a pure bouldering experience.

Atmosphere and Community

One of the highlights of Monk Eindhoven is its friendly and supportive atmosphere. Climbers cheer each other on, share tips, and create a motivating environment. During my session, I received encouragement for topping boulders and had great conversations with other climbers. It all added to the relaxed and enjoyable vibe of the gym. People spoke in both English and Dutch creating international atmosphere.

My Experience

I started upstairs, trying out some 6A problems and circling each ''mushroom'' to find the most appealing boulders. Later, I moved downstairs, diving into many more climbs.

One thing I noticed was that some start holds were missing clear tape markers. While this wasn’t a major issue - the start holds are usually obvious to me - it’s worth mentioning for the sake of less experienced climbers. After a slow start, I found my rhythm, working through tougher problems and ending my session feeling accomplished.

The Monk Shop

Before leaving, I visited the shop.
