We visited another climbing gym in Amsterdam. This time we went to De Klimmuur Centraal, conveniently located within walking distance of Amsterdam Central Station.
The climbing gym was originally designed in 1995 by LEVS architects as a temporary structure in what was then a rougher part of the city. Later, when the lease expired, the entire building was placed on a pontoon and moved, literally overnight, across the water to the other side of the railway. That is where it now stands, right on top of the IJ-tunnel.
The gym is clearly visible to train passengers arriving in Amsterdam. With its striking shape, a metal box that appears to tilt on one side, it immediately catches the eye. I even competed in the Dutch National Climbing Championships here years ago. It was enjoyable to return and see how the place has evolved over time.
First impressions
Upon entering, you step into a large, open space surrounded by climbing walls. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the overall vibe is welcoming. There is a separate bouldering area as well, including a campus board. However, this time we focused on the roped routes and skipped the boulders.
There is a small shop where you can buy climbing shoes or chalk. If you need to store valuables, lockers are available, but you need to bring your own lock.
The gym experienced a serious accident a few years ago, but now staff are clearly present and visibly keeping a good overview of the climbing areas.

Routes from the Flashtest competition
Ropes already have figure-eight knots tied, which makes it easy to get started. Just clip in with a carabiner, do a partner check, and you are good to go. During our visit, some of the routes from the recent Flashtest competition were still up. The finals routes on the main wall were especially impressive.
After warming up on the side walls, I tried the women’s final route, rated around 7B+. It featured many holds from Unit Holds, which I had never used before. Despite the heat, I managed to top the route. The heat was especially noticeable at the top of the wall. The roof is supposed to open for ventilation, but according to other climbers, it was broken. A pity, because it was quite warm.
Encouraged by the women’s route, I attempted the men’s final as well. Just like during our session in Rotterdam, I fell right before the finish, frustratingly close. The combination of heat and the challenging level was starting to take its toll. I tried a few more routes, but I kept falling just short near the top.

Glass wall
On one side, there is a door leading to a green terrace by the water, a great spot to relax. And that door? You can climb it too. The windows have built-in holds, allowing plenty of natural light to enter without losing climbing space. From the terrace, you can literally see climbers in action, which looks quite amusing.
After climbing, visitors can unwind with a drink or snack at the indoor or outdoor tables. The garden is well maintained, and from the terrace you can wave at passing tourists on the canal boats.

Explore Amsterdam
After our session, we grabbed a drink and snack across the street at Hannekes Boom, a lovely place to end your climbing day while watching the boats go by.
Is Amsterdam feeling too crowded? The walk to this gym and its surroundings can be a breath of fresh air. You can stroll along Oosterdokskade for great views, enjoy a drink at Hannekes Boom, take in free panoramic views from the rooftop of the NEMO Science Museum or the upper floors of the iconic public library. Want to surprise someone? You can even arrive by boat at Hannekes Boom and walk to the gym from there.
Final thoughts on De Klimmuur Centraal
The location of De Klimmuur Centraal is excellent, especially if you travel by public transport. Despite its age, the gym remains a great place to climb. It is unfortunate that the roof could not open on such a warm day. If you are looking for tough, technical routes and advanced sport climbing, Mountain Network Amsterdam might be a better fit. But if you enjoy variety, atmosphere, and a central location, De Klimmuur Centraal is definitely worth a visit.
Coming for the first time? You will need to either book an introductory lesson or show a valid Indoor Toprope Climbing Certificate.
Leuke en duidelijke review! De Klimmuur Centraal lijkt me een geweldige plek met veel variatie en een fijne sfeer. Staat nu zeker op mijn lijstje voor mijn volgende bezoek aan Amsterdam.
