Review: Boulder Gym Bruut in Breda

In this review series, we explore bouldering and climbing gyms across the Netherlands and share our experiences. We are kicking off with a personal favorite: the bouldering gym Bruut in Breda. No doubt about it—we’re fans of this gym!

Facilities and Bouldering Review

Bruut offers everything you'd expect from a top-notch bouldering gym - and more. The boulders are high-quality, thoughtfully designed for climbers of all levels. What stands out immediately is the attention to route setting. The gym invests significantly in holds and modules, featuring brands like 360, Axis, Cheeta, and Rustam across its walls. Even a 5A boulder here feels special, thanks to the quality holds and technical movements.

Atmosphere and Amenities

Parking? No problem—there’s free parking right at the door. As soon as you step inside, you’ll find a cozy seating area to the left, complete with a welcoming fireplace. Next to the bar is a small shop stocked with everything you might need for climbing, bouldering, and training. The changing rooms are compact but tidy, with small lockers available for valuables.

Training Facilities

Upstairs, you will find a well-equipped training area with a kilter board, spray wall, and campus board. There are also pull-up bars and a range of weights to help you build strength and improve technique. After a major expansion a few years ago, Bruut nearly doubled in size, offering a wide variety of walls—from technical slabs to challenging overhangs—covered with holds and modules of all shapes and sizes.

Bouldering Competition Wall: For a True Challenge

One of Bruut’s standout features is its dedicated competition wall (comp wall). Here, challenging problems are regularly set, pushing climbers to go the extra mile. It’s perfect for those looking for something beyond standard boulders.

Areas for Improvement?

Is there really nothing that could be improved? Well, aside from a few small details, everything is great. For example, the cleaning brushes - though they're my favorite - de Woodstokare available, but many have broken extension mechanisms, making them a bit less user-friendly. But honestly, these are minor details and don’t impact the overall top quality of this gym.

Bruut Open 2024

Want to experience Bruut’s atmosphere for yourself? This weekend, on November 9, 2024, the Bruut Open 2024 event will take place. Dutch talent Tedyano will be defending his title, though he’ll face plenty of competition! As he says himself: "Gravity exists. Just ignore it.”
