Review Block013 with beautiful extension

On March 9, 2025, the newest expansion of Block013 opened its doors. A perfect reason to visit this bouldering gym again and test out the brand new section

First impression: colorful walls & hidden expansion

Block013 is conveniently located along the canal and offers free parking on-site. Upon entering, the colorful bouldering walls immediately catch your eye, creating an energetic atmosphere. After checking in, we take a walk around the hall, searching for the expansion. Initially, it's hidden behind a door because work is still being done on the passage. But as soon as we step inside, it's immediately clear: this is a huge upgrade!

Comparison with the previous expansion

This is not the first time Block013 has expanded. A few years ago, part of the warehouse was added, which mainly provided extra space for training. Although that expansion was functional, it didn't bring any spectacular new climbing experiences. This new expansion, however, does!

The extra space features a top-out wall, a mushroom with an overhang, and more than 15 meters of vertical and slab walls. Just like upon entering, the walls are colorful and filled with new holds. We couldn't wait to try out these new boulders.

The bouldering session

The boulders are set by color, and each finish hold has a card with a pineapple on it. The warm-up goes smoothly, and soon I dive into the harder routes (7A and higher). The new holds collection is currently only in the new expansion but will be mixed in with the other boulders as they get refreshed. Personally, I really liked the holds in the black circuit of Cheeta and Snap. The top-out wall is also a great addition. It adds an extra dimension to the climbing experience and makes the session feel a bit more playful.

I encounter a lot of dual-texture holds where I need to place my foot on the no-texture part. This presents quite a challenge, as it feels like you're standing on ice. After climbing several boulders in the new section, we head back to the original hall. The difference in style is noticeable here. Despite the same building team, the boulders in this area feel more physical. It’s possible that the new holds and walls have inspired different designs.

More than just climbing

Block013 is not just a place to boulder, but also a serious training spot. The hall features a 40-degree Kilterboard, a spray wall, and a spacious training area. There’s also a world map with countless bouldering areas, perfect for anyone looking for inspiration for their next outdoor trip. Additionally, the changing rooms are tidy, and the bar has a cozy atmosphere. While enjoying a drink, you can cheer on other climbers or gather inspiration for your next attempt.

Final thoughts

The expansion of Block013 is undoubtedly a great asset. More space, new holds, and a top-out wall make it more than worth a visit.

When are you going to try the new routes at Block013?
