Bouldering in the Summer in Fontainebleau: A Heatwave Adventure

The summer was approaching and we decided to return to Fontainebleau for a new outdoor bouldering session. We had planned this trip well in advance, booked a traditional old house with friends, and left the weather up to chance. Although summer usually offers warm but pleasant conditions, this time we were faced with a true heatwave.

Optimal conditions for climbing

If you are interested in outdoor bouldering, you might know that many climbers prefer cooler days, with a maximum of 10 degrees Celsius and low humidity. At first glance, it may seem strange to climb in the cold, but there are good reasons for it.

Friction is one of the most crucial elements in climbing, as it determines how well your hands and shoes stick to the rock. Cooler air reduces sweaty hands, allowing climbers to maintain a stronger and more reliable grip.

Climbing during a heatwave

As you have probably already realised, summer is not the ideal time to tackle the most challenging boulder problems. Nevertheless, this period brings many other advantages. Summer climbing in Fontainebleau often means embracing a slower climbing pace, enjoying the surroundings, having long evening conversations, and appreciating nature just as much as the climbing itself.

A heatwave is not ideal, but with the right mindset and preparation, it can still be enjoyable. Seeking shade becomes essential. You can also choose to start early or climb later in the evening. How do you find the best spots? The guidebook naturally offers answers to most weather-related challenges.

Petit Bois, perfect for a warm day

On the first day, we visited Petit Bois. This area lies well in the shade and is located on the north side of a hill, which means it hardly receives any direct sunlight. Even on the hottest days, it offers a cool and inviting atmosphere. The flat ground and safe landings make it family-friendly and accessible for children. Moreover, it is situated right next to the parking area. This area is usually quite popular, but during our visit we were almost alone. We focused on the red and blue circuits, which felt just right at over 30 degrees.

We also visited the famous boulder with La Baleine, part of the black circuit. This boulder is shaped like a whale and is graded around 7A. It is a beautiful classic. I had tried it before without success and did not have any real expectations in this heat. Nevertheless, with good company and a supportive atmosphere, we managed to top it together. It was a memorable moment.

Bois Rond, also pleasant on a warm day

On the second day, we climbed in Bois Rond. The forest, with its pine and birch trees, creates that classic Fontainebleau atmosphere with a beautiful mix of shade and filtered sunlight. This makes it pleasant even on warmer days. This area is also ideal for climbers of every level or for a relaxed family day out.

The boulders are mostly low to the ground with soft, sandy landings, perfect for groups with varying levels of experience. We spent the day trying many red and blue problems, took the time to support every climber in our group, and enjoyed exploring the forest.

Rocher Saint-Germain Est, a shaded area

On our final morning, we visited Rocher Saint-Germain Est. It was shadier than I remembered and offered even more protection from the sun than Bois Rond. In April, we had still seen processionary caterpillars there, but their season had already passed, making it completely safe to climb.

The approach is easy, only five to ten minutes from the parking area. The boulders are scattered across a small hill and offer a mix of slabs, vertical problems, and steeper lines. I still had a few unfinished projects here, but the weather did not allow me to complete them, so they remain on my list for a future visit. Nevertheless, I managed to climb many boulders I had not had time for before. With more than three hundred routes, from children's circuits to demanding lines, there is more than enough choice.

The mostly flat landings make it safe for climbers of every level, and one crash pad is usually sufficient. It is a place where you can bring anyone along, whether they are climbing or simply enjoying their holiday.

In conclusion

Bouldering in the summer in Fontainebleau has its challenges, especially because of the heat, but it offers a unique and memorable holiday atmosphere. Do not forget to bring enough water and consider an extra pair of climbing shoes, as your feet may swell in the warmth. With good preparation, everything will turn out well. If you have a long weekend, seize the opportunity and enjoy the magic of climbing outdoors in Fontainebleau.
