Discovering a new bouldering gym is always exciting, and Boulderwijk in Boulderwijk is a fresh addition to the Netherlands' thriving climbing scene. Located conveniently on a residential boulevard, this gym offers free parking - perfect for climbers traveling by car. Just keep in mind it can get busy due to nearby home decor stores.
First Impressions
Upon entering Boulderwijk, the bustling atmosphere is immediately noticeable. Many climbers are eager to check out this new spot. The layout is well-organized, with changing rooms and toilets along the back wall. At both ends of the gym, you'll find U-shaped climbing walls, and there's already space reserved for an upcoming Kilterboard - a feature that promises even more fun in the future!

Still a Work in Progress
As a brand-new facility, Boulderwijk is still fine-tuning its features. For instance, I initially missed the training area, but later found it accessible via a staircase near the entrance. Over the coming weeks and months, these minor details will be addressed, enhancing the overall experience.
Fresh Holds, Fresh Challenges
A new gym means brand-new holds, and that’s instantly noticeable in Boulderwijk. The grippy texture makes climbing less strenuous, allowing for smoother movement. A mix of large and small holds from various brands ensures plenty of variety. One standout holds for me personally were Axis Disc 14 and 15 series—unique holds I hadn’t encountered before. Not only are they visually striking, but they’re also versatile and fun to climb on.
Boulder Grades System
Each problem is labeled with its grade, such as 6B/6C or 4/5a. However, like most new gyms, the grading can be a bit off. For example, I managed to flash a 7C, which is typically above my level. But remember: the joy of bouldering is in the movement and challenges, not just the numbers. Rest assured, Boulderwijk offers plenty to test your skills.

Climbing Style and Atmosphere
Boulderwijk stands out with its diverse climbing styles, offering enough variety for a full session. Unlike gyms with limited overhang routes, Boulderwijk has ample options for physically demanding problems. The facility is clean, well-maintained, and inviting - a must-visit for anyone in the area. It’s also a perfect stop if you want to pair your climb with a trip to the nearby beach.
