Essential Information About Climbing in the Netherlands

Bouldering is a form of climbing on shorter walls (up to 4.5 meters) without ropes, using crash pads for safety. Sport climbing, on the other hand, involves higher walls with the use of ropes and harnesses for protection. Bouldering focuses more on power and technique, while climbing tests endurance as well.

The Netherlands has a growing number of bouldering and climbing gyms in almost every major city, such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, and Eindhoven. You can find a full list of climbing and bouldering gyms on our website, along with reviews and upcoming competitions.

No experience is needed to start bouldering or climbing. Most gyms offer beginner friendly routes and introductory courses. For bouldering, you can start immediately with rental climbing shoes. For sport climbing, you may need an introduction to belaying before you can climb with ropes.

Wear comfortable sports clothing that allows freedom of movement. Climbing shoes are essential for both bouldering and sport climbing—most gyms offer rental options. Chalk is also useful in both sports to keep your hands dry for a better grip. If you're sport climbing, you'll also need a harness when using ropes. Most climbing gyms offer rental harnesses and other necessary equipment, and they will be provided during introduction classes. Avoid loose clothing that might get caught on holds.

Choosing the right climbing shoes depends on your skill level, foot shape, and climbing style. Beginners should opt for comfortable, snug-fitting shoes, while advanced climbers may prefer a tighter, more aggressive fit. If you're just starting out, don’t worry—all climbing gyms rent shoes for beginners. Want to know more? Read our full guide Here.
